Abstract

High-resolution transmission electron microscopic data have revealed the existence of nanoscale intragranular amorphous phase(s) in omphacite in eclogite from the Changpu in the Dabieshan UHP metamorphic belt, Eastern China. The domains were extensively investigated by other analyses such as electron microprobe, EDS, Micro-Raman and micro-IR data. The results from profiles analysis across the amorphous phase and micro-fractured regions within the omphacite grain indicate variations in compositions and OH band intensity, respectively. There is a marked increase of Fe2O3 and decrease of Al2O3 and Na2O in the amorphous regions as compared with those in crystalline omphacite. It suggests that OH may diffuse outward and further react with the atom at M2 site during more distorted plastic deformation, which occurs as the omphacite crystalline structure collapses to an amorphous phase.
