Abstract

The geological history of any region such as Britain and Ireland is the result of both local and global-scale processes. Individual chapters of this history, and of this book, will often seem to be dominated by the local complexities of climatic or tectonic settings, or of depo- sitional or magmatic environments. Although every effort will be made to highlight the control by global- scale processes, these factors can be appreciated best when viewed over a substantial time-scale. This chapter provides such a long-term overview of Earth pro- cess evolution (Section 2.1), before focusing on the global palaeocontinental framework (Section 2.2) and regional tectonic templates (Section 2.3) of Britain and Ireland.
