Abstract
The Valley of the Kings is the canvas upon which the royal mortuary complex was developed. The geology is fundamental to the topography of the area: the formation of the rocks and their uplift and erosion to form the deep valleys of the Theban massif in which the necropolis was hidden. The geology is also the source of some of the practical difficulties experienced by tomb builders as well as those encountered by archaeologists and conservators of today.
