Abstract
This special issue of Geochimica et Cosmochemica Acta is dedicated to our friend and colleague Harry Elderfield (1943–2016) who transformed the field of ocean geochemistry and palaeochemistry (Fig. 1). His passion for understanding the behavior of trace elements and their isotopes in modern seawater and how they are imprinted in the sediment record has advanced our understanding of geochemical cycling in the oceans. The special issue is aptly titled “Chemistry of oceans past and present” to reflect Harry’s contributions to both modern and ancient geochemical processes.
